My Experience at Market

What do you get when you send two designers to market to purchase new items for the store? Get ready Des Moines, because by Design has some really neat things coming in. In fact, we’ve already started seeing things arrive.

After an early morning plane ride into High Point, North Carolina, I finally got to experience my first High Point Furniture Market. Feeling overwhelmed with buildings full of showroom after showroom – I was lucky to have “market expert”, Laura Beeler, along with me to show me what market is all about. Not only did I get to see all the cool new trends for the year, but I also got to see what each company is all about and what truly makes their products special and unique.

My favorite part of market was seeing the showrooms and how each company displayed their products. It was inspiring for me to see how they mixed the old with the new. Not only does that apply for how we display our new products here at the store… but also in our clients home. Usually my clients have a table or a chair that they want to reuse with their new furniture. My job is to make sure it doesn’t look old, but to transform your room so that everything in there looks brand new! It was also great to see new fabrics on older frames. For example, one of our favorite frames, Norwalk’s Linkin Sofa looks nice and refreshing in this new fabric:linkin_sofa

Take a look at some of my favorite new things from market!

In addition to all the new products at market we also got to see all the new color trends. Most people have heard about Pantone’s new 2015 color of the year, Marsela, however many companies came up with different color trends for the year. For example, this company came out with oxblood and celadon as their new color trend. oxblood_celadon_color_trendTo be honest, when people ask me what’s the big color trend for 2015 I can’t give them one answer because there are so many great new colors. The main thing to keep in mind is that color in general is back! Enough with the nuetrals and monotones. It’s time to get bright and colorful in homes again!

Here at by Design we go above and beyond to make sure your house feels like a home. We don’t want to sell you a sofa because we have 10 of them in the back. We are all about building relationships with our clients, which is why it is important that the companies we represent will also go above and beyond to take care of us. After seeing the quality of products and meeting presidents of companies I can assure my clients that they will be taken care of, not only by us at by Design but also by our manufacturers.

This may be a little off topic but I can’t blog about my experience at market and not mention the food! We did not have to worry about ever going hungry. A special thank you to Norwalk Furniture for making home cooked meals for lunch, to American Leather for providing a great dinner, and to all the other companies that provided us with plenty of food to snack on. It was all very delicious!

I’m honored Kevin and Bonita decided to send me to market this year. I learned so much and had so much fun while I was there. Thank you!
