Working with architectural elements is very important in Interior Design. That’s why a rustic loft offers such an opportunity. The exposed brick, concrete floors and exposed beams lay bare the architectural elements that underlie the room. This rustic loft – in Downtown Des Moines – offered that kind of opportunity.
Keeping with the rustic theme, we used the gorgeous Parker sofa from American Leather in a “bomber jacket” inspired leather that shows all of the natural imperfections of the hide — just like the building shows all of the imperfections of construction.
In a loft, where there are few walls, every piece has to function as well as look great. One of their favorite pieces is next to her office space. Its a multi-drawer, industrial warehouse, storage piece that serves their many storage needs – while looking great in the space as well! Another important trick to designing a loft space is to use pieces that have more than one function. The main sofa actually has a built-in bench that we placed next to the fireplace. One of the challenges to designing and living in a loft is the lack of wall space to hang artwork. The trick is to use large or tall art pieces and just lean against the wall for a casual look. After all, that is what loft living is all about!
