Sometimes clients are like old friends. You feel like you have known them for a long time. Rosa & Mel would certainly fall into that category. Their design style is what we refer to as New Classics. Modern lines, materials and colors with a nod to traditional.
I have been working on their interior design project – the main level of their Des Moines home – over the past 10 months. This charming house is nestled in a beautiful, historic neighborhood. We knew we wanted the home to be comfortable, inviting, classic, light and airy. They love entertaining family and friends – so their home needed to be as friendly and welcoming as they are!

We came up with a plan for these 3 main areas… and then broke it into phases so they could see the layers all come together.
And Now After
The Solarium was easy with a chaise, rug & lamp for a quiet, cozy reading area. Natural light floods the room. Summer or winter this room is so inviting. Curl up on the Kira chaise with a good book!
The living room gives comfortable seating for a group while they can easily bring a dining chair in for extra company. Working off of the warm floors and woodwork we chose a rug and furniture that enhanced that in soft earthy tones. The beautiful art sets the stage for the room and the fun print on the chairs and the mercury glass lamp really support that look.
While the sofa cover is light, it is a performance fabric and they need not fear the grandkids sitting on it. We used the metal art and a darker metal etagere to share family mementos and personalize the room. We even found a simple wooden box to protect a special family bible.
We contrasted the wood tones in the dining room with a taupey toned dining set. It is a boat shaped table that picks up on the arches throughout the home. Our final layer was the draperies. Both rooms are brought together with the dimensional fabric in the draperies and soft brass rods.
I think we honored this historic house and gave them beautiful new spaces to feel right at home in. That means a lot when the clients are your friends.
