Before diving into furniture design, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of how you intend to use a space. Jessica recently worked with a client, Kathi, who was adding a new addition to her home that would fulfill multiple purposes. The intention was to create a versatile living space that would be conducive for hosting friends and family hang outs, TV watching, an office area, and dining. It also serves as a spare guest room through use of a sleeper sofa.
Floor Plan
So how do you go about designing the furniture for a flex space such as this? Attention to detail is the answer! With many pieces making up the furniture arrangement, it’s important to establish a floor plan to ensure it will all fit comfortably. Kathi was thrilled with the cozy layout making the most of the new addition’s total square footage.
Furniture Selections
The furniture pieces chosen help make this space versatile and oh so comfortable. The Drew recliners are the perfect spot to kick back and watch TV while the Zazu swivel gliders offer extra seating for guests. The nesting coffee tables help in being easy to move around when the sleeper is in use. The narrow dining table in an ebony finish is a great space for entertaining and extra work space. End tables bring practical and beautiful surface space. A neutral rug helps define the seating area and make it all feel cozy!
Fabrics & Finishes
Color inspiration struck when Kathi came across this floral print fabric. She loved the subtle colors and mix of black and blue. Jessica and Kathi knew right away this had to work into the project color scheme somehow.
Thanks to the inspiration fabric, Kathi’s originally neutral color palette began to take on a little more color and contrast. The light blues added a level of serenity to compliment the white and light gray fabrics. The black added a contrast to make the furniture pieces stand apart.
One final step was to layer in accessories and art. The accessories brought in more pops of gold accents to add another layer of warmth to the space.
Another important factor was to bridge the space with the hallway leading to the existing spaces. Here is where the custom art became extra special! Jessica helped Kathi with selecting a couple pieces of art for either end of the hallway. Then she added custom gold embellishment to liven the piece and bring an added level of customization and flair!

Maintaining a cohesive interior design throughout the home is crucial to ensure a seamless transition between old and new spaces. While the new addition might have its unique style, Jessica and Kathi wanted to ensure that the furniture’s colors, textures, and overall aesthetics complement the existing décor. This harmony creates a sense of continuity and makes the entire home feel more unified!
