Our friends at Saloom Furniture have introduced the South End Collection. Taking it’s inspiration from the hip, eclectic culture developing in Boston’s South End neighborhood, South End seeks to combine the visual and literal strength of oak and steel with a contemporary design aesthetic. We’re thinking of this collection as Industrial Design meets Organic Modern.
Industrial Design
Executing an industrial look with components made from milled steel in combination with cerused solid oak top construction allows South End to be both rugged and refined. South End offers a variety of base options, Tremont Trestle Base, Cambridge Pedestal Base, and the Lenox Oak Leg Base. All tabletops are crafted in solid oak with substantial 1 ¾” edges. These tops are available in a variety of round and rectangular sizes. In addition to tables South End offers an oak buffet and two oak credenzas available in three oak finishes. These cases feature solid oak and veneers, ball bearing glides, and dovetail drawers.
Inspiration
Peter Saloom’s inspiration came from visits to the boutiques and shops found in the South End neighborhood of Boston, known for eclectic boutiques, high fashion and design. “I saw a lot of product with industrial influence and rugged woods and wanted to take these elements and present a more refined, higher quality version, and to offer our customization capabilities,” he explained.
Cerused? Saloom developed several new finishes inspired by historic cerused techniques. The multi-step cerused finishes begin with a hand applied wire brush. The brush scuffs and opens up the grain. The base coat of color is then applied, a contrasting grain filler added, followed by highlighting steps. This results in distinctive contrasting grain patterns, or subtle enhancements, depending on the finish.
Customizable
South End offers a customizable product range, including a choice of table sizes, both fixed and extension, finish choices, a selection of chairs and fabrics for seating and coordinating buffets and credenzas.
